A frightened Key deer was spotted in harm’s way during the Big Pine Key brush fires in the Florida Keys. A brave firefighter took a risk by following the frightened fawn when it fled into the flames.

Monroe County Fire firefighter Jen Shockley Brack and her fellow firefighters were called out to protect homes and property during the sporadic flare-ups in late April.

“I saw this little guy run out and he was terrified,” she said, as reported by CBS Miami. “He was scared to death and his little legs were shaking.”

Upon running into each other, the spooked fawn initially evaded Brack by running straight into the inferno.

When Brack caught sight of the fawn, her heart went out to it, and she had only one thought in her mind—that was to make sure that it would not be harmed by the kindling flames.
